Answer

Do Dinosaurs Disprove The Bible? A Biblical and Scientific Perspective

Science often claims the earth is billions of years old and that dinosaurs lived over 230 million years ago, dying out 65 million years before humans existed. The Bible, however, says God made land animals and humans on the same day, Day 6 of creation. This raises a question many ask: Do Dinosaurs Disprove The Bible, or can both science and scripture be trusted?

Some wonder, “If the Bible’s creation account is wrong, can we really trust it about Jesus?” In this article, we’ll examine both young earth and old earth views, explore the flood’s role in fossil formation, and see why dinosaurs might actually confirm the Bible’s accuracy.

The Tension Between Science and Scripture

Science says dinosaurs existed millions of years before humans. The Bible says animals and humans were created together.

And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Both views cannot be true at the same time, which leads Christians into two main camps:

  • Young Earth Creationists — Believe the earth is about 6,000 years old. The “days” in Genesis are literal 24-hour days. Dinosaurs lived alongside humans. Most fossils were formed during Noah’s flood.
  • Old Earth Creationists — Accept the secular dating of the earth at 4.5 billion years. The “days” in Genesis are symbolic of long ages. Dinosaurs died out millions of years before humans.

Both positions are held by faithful Christians, but the difference changes how you interpret Genesis, death, and the gospel.

Problems with the Old Earth View

From a young earth perspective, there are two major issues:

1. It Rejects a Literal Reading of the Bible

Genesis describes evening and morning marking each day. Exodus 20:11 confirms creation took six days, not millions of years. This supports a literal reading.

For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

2. It Introduces Death Before Sin

Romans 5:12 says death entered the world through Adam’s sin. If animals died before humans existed, death wasn’t a result of sin—undermining the gospel.

Romans 8:20–22 says all creation suffers under the curse, longing for freedom from death and decay.

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

The Role of the Flood

Young earth proponents believe the flood explains both the fossil record and the apparent “age” of the earth. For fossils to form, an animal must be buried quickly and deeply; conditions that a global flood would create.

Genesis 7 describes rain from above and water bursting from underground, covering the highest mountains. This catastrophic event could explain why dinosaur and sea creature fossils are found on mountain tops.

Some fossils even show dinosaurs frozen mid-battle, suggesting sudden burial.

The Soft Tissue Discovery

In 2005, paleontologist Dr. Mary Schweitzer found soft, flexible tissue inside a Tyrannosaurus rex bone. This included:

  • Stretchy blood vessels

  • Possible red blood cells

  • Collagen protein

Soft tissue should break down within thousands of years, not millions. This discovery challenges the idea that dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago and supports a much younger timeline.

Do Dinosaurs Disprove The Bible? The Big Picture

When we look at scripture and the evidence, dinosaurs don’t disprove the Bible; they may strengthen it. The Bible has been right before when science was wrong.

For example:

  • The Bible taught the universe had a beginning long before the Big Bang theory confirmed it.

  • It described the Earth as round and suspended in space long before astronomy proved it.

We should interpret science in light of the Bible, not the other way around.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does the Bible mention dinosaurs?

While the word “dinosaur” didn’t exist until the 1800s, creatures like Behemoth (Job 40) and Leviathan (Job 41) may describe dinosaur-like animals.

How do young-earth creationists explain fossils?

They believe most fossils formed during Noah’s flood, when animals were buried quickly under mud, sand, and sediment.

Why is “death before sin” such a big theological issue?

If death existed before Adam’s sin, then death is not a result of sin, which undermines the gospel message of Jesus defeating death.

What about radiometric dating?

Young earth supporters argue that dating methods make unprovable assumptions about the past, similar to guessing how long a candle has been burning without knowing its starting size or burn rate.

Can Christians believe in an old earth?

Yes. There are sincere Christians on both sides, but it affects how you interpret Genesis, the nature of death, and the gospel timeline.
