Answer

Are Christians and Mormons the same? Understanding the Key Differences

Are Christians and Mormons the same? It’s a question many people ask because Mormonism uses Christian language and professes belief in Jesus Christ. Yet, to answer this fairly, we must look closely at what Mormonism teaches about Jesus, God, Scripture, and salvation. Only then can we decide if Mormon beliefs align with historic, biblical Christianity.

Here, we will walk through the five major differences between Mormonism and evangelical Christianity. These include the origin of each faith, their views of Scripture, their understanding of God, their beliefs about Jesus, and their teaching on salvation.

The Origins of Christianity vs. Mormonism

Christianity began with Jesus Christ. He lived a sinless life, performed miracles, taught with divine authority, died for our sins, and rose from the dead. His life and message form the foundation of biblical Christianity.

However, Mormons share a different origin story. Mormonism began in 1823 when Joseph Smith claimed an angel named Moroni appeared to him. According to Smith, this angel led him to buried golden plates containing the “true gospel.” Smith said the angel took these plates back to heaven, which makes verification impossible.

Paul gives a strong warning in Galatians 1:6–9. He states that even if “an angel from heaven” preaches a different gospel, we must reject it. Truly, this reminder is vital as we compare Mormon teachings with Scripture.

The Question of Revelation: Which Books Are Inspired?

Evangelical Christians believe in Sola Scriptura, meaning Scripture alone is our final authority. We hold that the 66 books of the Bible form a closed canon. Nothing can be added, changed, or corrected.

However, Mormons accept four inspired books:

  1. King James Bible
  2. Book of Mormon
  3. Doctrine and Covenants
  4. The Pearl of Great Price

In Mormonism, the Book of Mormon carries the highest authority. Of course, this creates tension because Joseph Smith edited the King James Bible many times to match the Book of Mormon. When multiple books contradict each other, something must be false, because God does not contradict Himself.

Additionally, Mormon leaders receive ongoing revelation. These messages are viewed as equally inspired. Conversely, this differs sharply from the Christian belief that God has already given His complete and perfect revelation.

The Nature of God: Creator or Exalted Man?

Traditional Christianity teaches that God is the uncreated Creator. He has always existed. God is eternal, unchanging, and perfect. He is spirit, not flesh. Scripture never describes God as married.

Therefore, Mormonism teaches something very different. According to Mormon doctrine:

  • God was once a man.
  • He progressed into godhood.
  • Now he rules over Earth from a physical body.
  • He has a wife, often called the “Heavenly Mother.”

In fact, Mormon teaching also says, “As man is, God once was. As God is, man may become.” This implies that humans can become gods of their own planets.

So, these beliefs go against the clear teaching of the Bible. John 4:24 states that “God is spirit.” Psalm 90:2 describes God as eternal and uncreated.

Who Is Jesus? Created Being or Eternal God?

Christianity teaches that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, the second Person of the Trinity. He is equal with the Father. He is not created. John 1:1 says, “The Word was God.” Colossians 1 describes Jesus as the Creator of all things.

Mormonism teaches that Jesus:

  • is a created being,

  • did not exist eternally as God,

  • is the elder brother of Lucifer,

  • and was married during His earthly ministry.

These teachings lower Jesus from eternal God to created being. This stands in direct contradiction to the Bible.

Salvation: Gift of Grace or Path to Exaltation?

The Bible teaches that salvation comes by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Ephesians 2:8–9 makes this clear. We cannot earn salvation. It is a gift from God.

Mormonism teaches a different path. According to Mormon doctrine, salvation:

  • includes resurrection,
  • includes progression toward becoming a god,
  • requires temple rituals,
  • calls for baptism in a Mormon church,
  • marriage is required,
  • and requires ongoing obedience.

Mormons believe in three levels of heaven:

  1. Celestial Kingdom (highest level, for faithful married Mormons)
  2. Terrestrial Kingdom (for good people, including non-Mormons)
  3. Telestial Kingdom (for sinful people)

Alternatively, they also practice baptism for the dead, believing it can help someone enter the highest level of heaven after death.

This differs greatly from the Christian belief in one heaven, one hell, and salvation by grace alone.

Are Mormons Christians? A Clear Look at the Differences

As a result, given the significant differences in Scripture, the nature of God, the identity of Jesus, and the meaning of salvation, the teachings of Mormonism do not align with historic, biblical Christianity. That is why many Christian theologians answer the question, “Are Christians and Mormons the Same?” with a sincere but clear, “No.”

This does not mean Mormons are not kind, moral, or sincere. In fact, many are wonderful people. But sincerity does not determine truth. Doctrine does.

If you are a Mormon reading this, you are welcome here. The goal is understanding, clarity, and honest conversation.

FAQ: Are Mormons Christians?

1. Do Mormons believe in Jesus Christ?

Yes. Mormons believe in Jesus Christ, but their understanding of who Jesus is differs from biblical Christianity. They teach that Jesus is a created being and the spirit-brother of Lucifer, not the eternal God.

2. Why don’t most evangelical Christians consider Mormonism Christian?

Evangelicals believe that Christianity must affirm the historic, biblical view of God, Jesus, Scripture, and salvation. Mormon teachings differ in each of these areas, which places Mormonism outside orthodox Christianity.

3. Do Mormons accept the Bible?

They accept the King James Version, but only as long as it agrees with the Book of Mormon. They also consider three other books as inspired and give ultimate authority to the Book of Mormon.

4. What do Mormons believe about salvation?

Mormons believe salvation involves resurrection plus progression toward becoming a god. This path requires temple rituals, Mormon baptism, marriage, obedience, and continual good works.

5. What is the biggest difference between Christianity and Mormonism?

The largest difference is the identity of God and Jesus. Christianity teaches that God has always existed and that Jesus is the eternal God. Mormonism teaches that God was once a man who became a god, and Jesus is a created being.
